Plastek's Research and Development personnel are constantly innovating new products through a multi step creative process. New designs are continually being invented for the company's extensive inventory of stock products. Plastek's R&D personnel are committed to provide consistent critical expertise to all aspects of each customer's development project.

The disciplines represented by Plastek's R&D personnel are wide ranging. Project management, product engineering, Injection molding, plant engineering, product cost studies, industrial design, and high level communication skill are all key parts of the repertoire.

THE STEPS

RESEARCH - The R&D process starts with the gathering of information and formulation of project objectives.

CONCEPT SEARCH - The next step is the creative ideation process. This involves mostly thinking and early sketch visualization. Esthetics, Human factors, mechanical invention and preliminary cost analysis are all studied.

PRESENTATION - Communication of the results of the ideation process to the customer's marketing and management personnel for their critique and analysis is next. This provides direction selection for the next step.

DETAIL DESIGN - Once a design direction is selected the detail aspects of the design are worked out. This includes general feasibility, molding analysis, More accurate part weight based cost analysis, detailed esthetic evolution via product renderings, and the creation of A three dimensional product database for the product assembly and the parts in the assembly. The renderings are presented to the customer's marketing and management personnel for critique.

MODEL DEVELOPMENT - Using the three dimensional data and stereo lithography and other model fabrication technologies working models are created to verify the assumptions and decisions made in the previous steps. The models are presented to the customer's marketing and management personnel. Often these models are used by the Customer's package engineering and marketing people during marketplace studies such as focus groups.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - traditional product engineering is carried forward. Integrity for molding, assembly methods and equipment, material specifications, fits and seals, tolerances, functionality of the mechanical aspect of the product and color and finishes are all addressed. When completed this product engineering package passes from R&D on to Plastek's tooling engineering group.
